Exercise for back pain

Back pain, scoliosis or Scheuermann’s disease do not have to mean the end of sport. At IKKOS Premium Fitness in Bratislava’s Old Town, training for problematic spines is led by Master trainer Martin Francúz. He has Scheuermann’s disease and scoliosis himself and is certified in the McGill, DNS and Spiral Stabilization methods. Training starts with an assessment, based on which we set up exercise that strengthens the spine instead of overloading it.

Spinal pain during sport, after exertion or in everyday activities is becoming more and more common. Whether you have had a damaged disc in the past, have current (non-acute) pain or a herniated disc, feel tension in your back or neck, or have a spinal deformity such as scoliosis, with properly set training adapted to the individual you can do sport without pain.

A sudden “catch” in the back or neck during exercise is often caused by underestimating or not knowing exercises that build spinal stability, by insufficient mobility, for example of the hips or thoracic spine (if it is not painful), by choosing exercises that do not suit the individual and, last but not least, by poor technique.

Another problem is poor movement habits in everyday life that repeatedly cause pain or discomfort. They keep irritating the problem area, and then we lack the capacity to train without pain.

The first step is to book a back pain assessment, which includes your medical history, an assessment of your back pain and setting your goal.

(If you have an MRI, X-ray or CT scan and a doctor’s report, please bring it to the first session or send it beforehand. It is fine if you have nothing like that.)

Based on the assessment, your physical fitness and your goal, we create a tailor-made plan. We choose the right difficulty and exercise variations with a good risk-versus-benefit balance.

IKKOS of ancient Greece, who lived in the 5th century BC, was considered the best coach of his time. He was one of the first to combine proper nutrition with training for maximum performance and health. He proved his approach right by winning the pentathlon at the 84th Olympic Games himself.

At IKKOS Premium Fitness we continue the philosophy of constant progress and improvement of training methods. We believe that meaning and happiness lie in pushing our own limits and continuous work on ourselves.

Today, people need few things more than proper movement. Getting up from a chair or the sofa and going straight into sport without proper preparation often leads to injuries. Before we can reach our goal, we often have to deal with a problem in the musculoskeletal system. Badly learned movements, such as lifting a load with a rounded back, cause pain over time.

The most common mistakes when training without a trainer are:

  • inadequate warm-up before training
  • poor exercise technique
  • incomplete or no core training
  • choosing exercises that do not suit the individual
  • overloading some parts of the body and neglecting others, which causes imbalances that lead to pain, e.g. in the shoulders, knees or spine.

Properly set training must be tailored to each person and take their weak points into account. We need to find the weakest link in the body and fix it, whether it is poor mobility in joints that should be mobile, such as the hips, or poor stability in joints that should be stable, such as the lower back. Balance in training is the most important thing, so the client can progress towards their goals without injury. Setting the right “mix” of mobility, stability, strength and fitness is our gold standard.

I have tried several similar gyms where you can only train with a trainer, but I was never as satisfied as here. Trainer Mirko is perfect – he can adapt training to various injuries with an emphasis on the client's safety. (translated from Slovak)
